Scholarship Information Margaret Aguwa, D.O. Endowed Scholarship Eligibility: Only students in their first year of osteopathic medical school and in good academic standing at the end of Fall Semester are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to underrepresented minorities. The Blue Care Network of Michigan Endowed Scholarship in Honor of Pedro Rivera, D.O. Eligibility: Students who are incoming to the College or in their first, second or third year are eligible to apply. Recipients may reapply for the scholarship in subsequent years if they are in good academic standing and continue to meet the stated criteria. Criteria: Students must have demonstrated financial need. The donor has requested that preference be given to the following students: Latino students or students who have a demonstrated background serving the Latino community in the United States; students who intend to pursue family practice or are primary care oriented; students who are Michigan residents; students who intend to practice medicine in an underserved community. Amount: Variable, minimum $1,000 Application process: Letter of application, interview. The College Scholarship Committee will recommend the top scholarship candidate and two alternates from the applicant pool, whose names will be submitted to the Rivera family for review. Date: January 15 Joseph J. and Betty J. Gadaleto Endowed Scholarship Eligibility: Only students who are enrolled in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and the MSU College of Human Medicine. Criteria: Only students who will be third- and fourth-year students who have completed their preclinical medical training in East Lansing. Recipients should be students of exceptional academic achievement and moral character who show promise for leadership and the potential to have a positive impact on society. Recipients should have demonstrated commitment to community service and a strong work ethic. Recipients should have demonstrable financial need as determined by the federal government according to its policies and procedures. Amount: The number of awards made in a given year and the amount of the awards will be based upon available expendable amounts in that year. Application Process: Essay. Recipients will be chosen by a committee composed of three (3) people; the Chair of the Department of Radiology in East Lashing or a designate; the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine in the College of Human Medicine in East Lansing or a designate; the Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine in the College of Osteopathic Medicine or a designate. The chair of this committee will be the Chair of the Department of Radiology. This committee will select one third-year student from each College to receive the Scholarship. Provided this student remains in good academic standing, the Scholarship will be renewable for his or her fourth year of medical school. Dr. Elissa Gatlin Scholarship Eligibility: Only students who are in their first year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to students who are from under-represented ethnic or economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Individuals with strong records of community service. Financial need. Preference given to Michigan residents and to students who are graduates of Western Michigan University or Michigan State University. Amount: About $700 Application Process: Letter of recommendation. Loren O. Gettel Scholar Program in Rural Health Eligibility: Only students who are in their third or fourth year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The Gettel Scholar Program provides a stipend for eligible medical students to attend the Annual Rural Health Conference in March of each year. The donor has requested that preference be given to students who have an expressed interest in primary care and a genuine interest/curiosity about rural health care. Special consideration will be given to students whose background and experiences might suggest a commitment to rural health, and to students who intend to practice in Michigan upon completion of a primary care residency program. Number of awards: Up to four awards for a total anticipated pay out of $1,500. Award includes: Conference registration. For students outside the Lansing area: hotel accommodations, reimbursement for gas and meals. Application process: Application forms available in the Office of Student Services. Doris J. Giddey Scholarship Fund Eligibility: Only incoming students to the osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to a student who is a Michigan resident, in good academic standing, shows financial need, meets the moral and ethical standards of the osteopathic profession and demonstrates promise of making a professional contribution to osteopathic medicine. Amount: A minimum of $5,000 per year; follows a single student for four years as long as student is in good academic standing. Application process: Letter of application, interview. Awards announced during Spring Semester and will be credited to financial aid package. Award made once every four years. Application due date: January 15 (every four years) Gayl M. Godsell-Stytz, D.O., Memorial Endowed Scholarship Eligibility: Only students who are enrolled in their third or fourth year in MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Criteria: Only students who are enrolled in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and in good academic standing with a preference given to those in financial need, as determined by the Federal Government, who are planning to practice Emergency Medicine. Secondary preference to those students committed to practicing Oncology Medicine. No student having completed law school will be eligible. The Guilfoyle and Milios Endowed Scholarship Eligibility: Students who are in their first, second or third year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to students who intend to practice primary care, who are residents of the state of Michigan, have a demonstrated commitment to community service and volunteerism, and who intend to practice in an underserved area. Preference shall be given to students who have an interest in gaining international medical experiences. Amount: The College of Osteopathic Medicine considering the amount of distributable income available will determine the amount of the award. Harden Memorial Scholarship Eligibility: Only students who are in their first year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: Students demonstrating financial need and in good academic standing. The donor has requested that preference be given to students from an underrepresented ethnic background, and those who have a demonstrated commitment to volunteer and community service. Ingham County Medical Society Alliance Scholarship Fund Eligibility: Only students who are enrolled in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Criteria: Only students enrolled in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine who are graduates from high school located in Ingham, Clinton, or Eaton counties and who are in good academic standing. Amount: The number of awards made in a given year and the amount of the awards will be based upon expendable amounts in that year. Application Process: Essay. The College Scholarship Committee will select a list of finalists and submit their application materials to the Ingham County Medical Society Alliance Scholarship Fund Committee who will recommend a recipient(s). Ingham County Osteopathic Auxiliary Scholarship Eligibility: Students who are entering either their second, third or fourth year of osteopathic medical school. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to students in the top 50% of their class and who have been State of Michigan residents when they entered school at Michigan State University. Amount: Variable, based on the amount of available expendable income in the year of the award. Application process: 500 word essay and a formal letter of recommendation from a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. The MSUCOM Scholarship Committee will select from the applicants the top three students and recommend to the Ingham County Osteopathic Auxiliary that the Interview Committee of the Ingham County Osteopathic auxiliary interview these students. Following the interviews, the Interview Committee of the Ingham County Auxiliary will recommend a recipient to the MSUCOM Scholarship Committee. The MSUCOM Scholarship Committee shall make the final decision on a recipient. Selection will be made during the Spring Semester and the award effective the following Fall Semester. International Health Enrichment Fund for COM Students Eligibility: Only students who are in their first, second or third year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The International Health Enrichment Fund for COM Students provides funds to pay for food, lodging and travel for as many students as possible each year who want to travel to third world countries and work with supervising physicians as part of their medical school experience. "DO Care" participants shall receive first priority, followed by other international experiences offered by the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Michigan State University and by the Osteopathic Profession. Financial need shall not be a determining factor in receiving this award. Number of awards: The award normally shall be awarded one time each year to one or more applicants. Amount: The amount of the award shall be determined based on the amount of distributable income available each year. Application process: One to two page essays about what this international experience will mean to the applicants and how they hope to use this experience to enhance their professional commitment to service. The George M. Kabakovich Trust in Memory of Holly Jean Kabakovich, D.O. Eligibility: Only students who are incoming to MSUCOM are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that the recipient has met all admissions requirements and has been accepted to MSUCOM. Amount: The amount of the award shall be determined according to the amount of distributable income available. The award will follow a single student for four years as long as he/she remains in good academic standing at MSUCOM. Application process: Two-page letter of application explaining why the student is uniquely qualified for the scholarship. The Annette H. Kabara Family Memorial Endowed Fund Eligibility: Only students who are in their fourth or final year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to be nominated. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to graduating students who are parents having faced special challenges. Recipients assume the responsibility to give back to the Kabara fund an amount commensurate with that which they received. Kilbourn/DiStefano Endowed Scholarship Eligibility: Only students who are enrolled in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Criteria: Only students enrolled in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine with preference given to those who received their High School Diploma from the Detroit, Flint or Lansing Public School System. Applicants must also produce a letter of recommendation from a faculty member of the MSUCOM Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and demonstrate an interest in osteopathic manipulative medicine. Amount: The number of awards made in a given year and the amount of the awards will be based upon expendable amounts in that year. Application Process: Essay and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the MSUCOM Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Paul C. Linnell, M.D., Scholarship Fund Eligibility: Only students who are in their second or third year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to Michigan residents with special consideration given to those from mid-Michigan. Well-rounded students who not only have a solid academic background, but also demonstrate strength in other areas which include leadership skills, community service and volunteerism. Names of three nominees are forwarded to Dr. Linnell (or his designee) during Spring Semester, and he recommends a recipient and two alternates. Application due date: January 15 MAOFP MSUCOM Student Physician of the Year Eligibility: Only students who are in their fourth year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to be nominated. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to a student who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to osteopathic Family Medicine during medical school; a member in good standing of the MAOFP; exemplifies the highest qualities of dedication to the osteopathic profession, to patients and to the community through professional and public service as a student. Scholarship and leadership activities will also be recognized. Amount: $500 and a certificate. Application Process: Nominations sought from Family and Community Medicine Department Chairperson, preceptor, faculty member, mentor, Director of Medical Education or hospital administrator, physician, resident, intern or another student. Each candidate must submit to the MAOFP a one-page biography and curriculum vitae, as well as a written statement(s) from each nominating person. the student may have more than one nominating individual. A letter from the Office of the Dean as well as a teacher or family practice mentor supporting the nomination and attesting to the student's good academic standing is also required. The Andrew C. Matheson, D.O., Memorial Scholarship Eligibility: Only student who are in their first, second or third year of osteopathic medcial school are eligible to apply. The Paul S. McCord, D.O., Memorial Award Eligibility: Only students who are in their fourth or final year of osteoapthic medical school are eligibile to be nominated. Criteria: The donor has requested that recipients shall be selected on a basis of commitment to community service and service in medically underserved areas such as rural medical practice, inner-city, Native American reservations or service areas, and a strong commitment to primary care disciplines and financial need. Michigan Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators (MAODME) Annual Scholarship Award Eligibility: Only students who are in their third or fourth year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to students who have an expressed interest and demonstrated involvement in medical education activities in a hospital setting. Students should have financial need and must be in good academic standing as determined by the College of Osteopathic Medicine. The scholarship shall be awarded once a year for a period of two years to one, two or three recipients. Amount: $2,000, which shall be split according to the number of recipients selected. Application process: Students must submit a letter of recommendation from a medical educator (clinical faculty, teaching faculty, DME, ADME, etc.) who can speak of the involvement of the candidate in medical education and must write a personal statement why they should be awarded this scholarship based on the criteria. The College Scholarship Committee shall select up to three (3) candidates for this award. The candidates will then be reviewed by the person(s) or committee selected by the MAODME President, and the committee will make their recommendation to the College Scholarship Committee for final selection of the recipient(s). The Michigan Association of Physicians from India (MAPI) Endowed Scholarship for Students of Asian Indian Heritage Eligibility: Only students who are in their first, second or third year of osteopathic medical school in that preferential order are eligible to apply. Criteria: Good academic standing; the donor has requested that preference be given to students of Asian Indian heritage and to Michigan residents; excellence in leadership and responsibility to medicine and to the Asian Indian community; financial need. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to a graduating student in good academic standing who has been active in a wide variety of college leadership and extracurricular activities. Michigan Osteopathic College Foundation Scholarship and Michigan Osteopathic College Foundation - Raymond Biggs Scholarship Eligibility: Students who are incoming to the College or in their first, second and third year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: Scholarship recipients must be Michigan residents at the time of enrollment in the College and have demonstrated a strong commitment to osteopathic medicine. The donor has requested that preference be given to students who are geographically under-represented in the College, intend to practice medicine in an underserved area and who are ethnically under-represented in the College. Scholarships will be awarded with the expectations that recipients will become productive members of the osteopathic profession in Michigan and will dedicate their time, energy and resources to support the profession and the education of its students. Amount: The amount of funds available for scholarship awards will be determined on an annual basis consistent with spending policy adopted by the Michigan Osteopathic College Foundation Board. It is anticipated that eight scholarships in equal amounts will be awarded to students who are enrolled in years one through four at the College. Scholarships will follow the recipients through graduation from osteopathic medical school as long as the recipient continues to meet the scholarship criteria. For academic year 2003-2004, the College awarded eight scholarships in the amount of $4,500 each. Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship and Award Eligibility: Only students who are in their second, third or fourth year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to students enrolled in the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, have demonstrated financial need, are Michigan residents, have a demonstrated commitment to community service, who intend to have a long-term commitment to serving the state of Michigan, who will be active in the COM Alumni Association. Amount: Shall be determined by the College of Osteopathic Medicine considering the amount of income available. Application process: Letter of application, interview. Names of three nominees will be submitted to the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Association Board of Directors for review during Spring Semester. The donor will recommend a recipient and two alternates for the award. Award to be effective Fall Semester of third or fourth year for second or third year recipients. Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Non-Resident Student Scholarship Eligibility: Students who are incoming to the College of Osteopathic Medicine or in their first or second year of study. Criteria: Scholarship recipients must be non-residents of the State of Michigan at the time of enrollment and during their enrollment in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, in good academic standing as determined by the College of Osteopathic Medicine, demonstrate financial need and demonstrate a strong commitment to osteopathic medicine. Amount: Shall be determined by the College of Osteopathic Medicine considering the amount of income available and number of applications. Scholarships will follow recipients for one year. Incoming and first year student recipients may re-apply for scholarships during their first year of study in the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Student Osteopathic Medical Association Endowed Scholarship Eligibility: Only students who will be in their second, third or fourth year of medical school and members of SOMA. Criteria: Preference shall be given to those students actively involved in SOMA events and with strong records of Community Service. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to an African-American student who shows excellence, leadership, and responsibility to medicine and the African-American community; Michigan resident, financial need, and good academic standing. Recipients may also have graduated from Oakland County college or university. The Amedeo Piccinini Endowment Fund Eligibility: Only students in their third year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to students who have a desire to participate in a rotation in the sequential order of Italy, Europe, Asia. Students shall be in good academic standing "as determined" by the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Sinai Medical Staff Foundation Endowed Scholarship in the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Eligibility: Only students who are incoming or in their first year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that recipients shall be selected on a basis of academic excellence, financial need, and qualifications shall include having received elementary, secondary and undergraduate collegiate education from schools within the United States of America. Amount: The amount of the award shall be determined by the Dean of the College of Osteopathic medicine according to the amount of distributable income available. The recipient shall continue to receive the scholarship each year they are a student in the college as long as they stay in academic good standing. The recipient of the award shall be known as the "Sinai Medical Staff Foundation Scholar in the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine." Kay E. White Scholarship Fund Eligibility: Only students in first, second or third year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to students in good academic standing who have an exceptional past record of volunteer service (e.g., Big Brothers/Big Sisters, United Way, Planned Parenthood, Scouting, etc.) and other IRS 501b(3) service organizations and whose commitment to community would continue, in all likelihood, well beyond medical school. Robert L. Young Loan Fund Background: Thomas Young established this student loan fund in honor of and to perpetuate the memory of his deceased son, Robert L. Young. The purpose of the fund is to provide low-interest loans to eligible students in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Human Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. The income and interest from the fund are divided equally among the three Colleges. Each College has established its own eligibility (see below.) Eligibility: Students who are incoming to the College or in their first, second and third year of osteopathic medical school are eligible to apply. Criteria: The donor has requested that preference be given to students who have a demonstrated commitment to and understanding of osteopathic principles and practice, have a demonstrated financial need. Applicants must submit the completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid Form (FAFSA) by March 1, have a broad and varied background in community or human service related experiences, and be in good academic standing as determined by the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Amount: Variable. For academic year 2003-2004, the College of Osteopathic Medicine granted twelve loans ranging in amount from $500 to $8,000.
