Retention Levels For MSUCOM Students as Defined in the
Policy for Retention, Promotion and Graduation

The MSUCOM Policy for Retention, Promotion and Graduation is administered by the Committee on Student Evaluation (COSE). The following information is a summary of the retention levels for COM students pursuing the D.O. degree as defined in that policy.

DURING PRE-CLERKSHIP AND CLERKSHIP CURRICULUM

ACTION
1. "N" grades exceeding 1/3 of a Semester's total required credits attempted. Must appear before COSE for academic review.
2. "N" grades exceeding 1/5 of total required credits earned in program to date. Must appear before COSE for academic review.
3. Three "N" grades in any single required department or course sequence. Must appear before COSE for academic review.
4. 1 or more "N" grades in a clinical subject involving patient contact. Must appear before COSE for academic review.
5. "N" grades exceeding 40% of total credits attempted in required courses. (Applies to first and second Semester students only.) Automatic Dismissal. Must appear before COSE if seeking reinstatement.
6. "N" grades exceeding 1/4 of total credits attempted in required courses. (Applies to third Semester students and beyond.) Automatic dismissal. Must appear before COSE if seeking reinstatement.
7. A student who fails to appear before COSE, as directed, without due cause. Will be referred to the Associate Dean/Student Services.

 

NOTE: Accumulation of "N" grades includes remediated and non-remediated courses.
