Financial Aid and Scholarships

The MSU Office of Medical Student Financial Aid helps students in the medical colleges to obtain and manage various forms of financial assistance. They also provide information about budgeting, housing, insurance, and other important resources to help students plan for and finance their medical education.

In addition, MSUCOM has developed a growing array of scholarships and loans to address the critical issue of financial stress among our students. These scholarships and loans vary in the amount of funding, criteria, timing, and focus, all of which are established by the donors when the initial agreements are signed.

Applying for MSUCOM Scholarships

Background information including criteria, amount of the awards and application processes for all MSUCOM scholarships and loans are available on our Web site.

Interested MSUCOM students need to read carefully about each scholarship or loan, assess the criteria, provide all requested application materials, and get their applications in on time. For scholarships/loans requiring letters of application, the letters should be no longer than two double-spaced pages or 500 words.

Application materials for all MSUCOM scholarships/loans must be submitted to the MSUCOM Office of Student Services, C-110 East Fee Hall, no later than 5:00 p.m. on the application due date. No late applications will be accepted.

Alternatively, you may use our online application form.

How Scholarships Are Awarded

The MSUCOM Scholarship Committee meets regularly to review applications, assess the ability of applicants relative to the criteria, and award scholarships and loans. All information used in the decision-making process — which may include written applications, interviews, financial need, scholastic achievement, etc. — is held in strict confidence.

Emergency Loans

The Associate Dean for Student Services maintains an Emergency Student Loan Fund for MSUCOM students who find themselves short of money. Amounts up to $2,000, if available, can be borrowed interest free with payback being automatically deducted from the student's next financial aid check. Examples of instances for which funds can be borrowed include: family emergencies, car repairs, rent etc. The Emergency Student Loan Fund is made possible from proceeds generated by the Osteopathic Open Golf Tournament. If you are interested in obtaining an emergency loan, please contact Dr. Falls in the Office of Student Services.
