Osteopathic students give back to Lansing at the annual CATA Health Fair

by Courtney Curran

In mid-April, The Capital Area Transportation Authority’s (CATA) 10th Annual Community Health Fair was held on April 24 in conjunction with the Lansing 150 Health Week Celebration. The health fair, which was located at the CATA Transportation Center in downtown Lansing,, focused on educating participants on healthy lifestyles and the healthcare resources available in their area. Cosponsors of the event were the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Tri-County Office on Aging.

The health fair featured more than 20 local health organizations and human service agencies, including student volunteers from MSUCOM’s Community Integrated Medicine (CIM) student group. CIM provided free health screenings throughout the day, evaluating participants on their basic health along with screening blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol. The students were also available to answer questions on how to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“Many of the people that come to health fair rely on us and other free services,” said CIM President William Workman. “Knowing that we are able to provide those who have no other medical care with a basic health screening is a very satisfying and humbling experience. Every health fair I go to makes me realize how fortunate I am. It gives me even more drive to try to give back my time to the community.”

CIM aims to educate indigent members of the community on health issues and also provide healthcare counseling and disease prevention services. “We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to go to medical school to become physicians. Volunteering in the community gives us the opportunity to interact with different people. These interactions strengthen our skills which will allow us to better treat our patients in the future,” said Workman.

The week’s events also included a 5K race for MSU Safe Place, a “Vet-A-Visit” tour of the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, and discounts for local fitness centers including YMCA and the Michigan Athletic Club.
