Swan Valley High School Students Help MSUCOM's
Heart & Sole campaign

Swan Valley High School students collected these shoes and $150 this semester for the MSUCOM Heart and Sole shoe project. It was tied to their Economics chapter about Developing Countries, a US History chapter about the Great Depression, and a Civics class emphasizing good citizenship and charity. They were shown the following graph of GDP per capita to emphasize the wealth disparity between the nations who receive these shoes and the fully developed nations such as the United States.

Mr. Chris Schiemann, a Central Michigan University student teacher collaborating with Social Studies teacher Dave Adams at the school, developed this idea as his service learning project for his student teaching seminar.
