250 celebrate grand opening of DMC facilities
More than 250 invited guests toured, heard speakers and attended
a reception at MSUCOM’s new facilities at the Detroit
Medical Center on September 17. The grand
opening– replete with tent, ribbon-cutting, and a video of Sparty getting
a physical – included student-led tours of classrooms,
laboratories, study areas, conference rooms, student lounge,
anatomy lab, and more. Speakers included Joel Ferguson, chairperson
of the MSU Board of Trustees; Lou Anna K. Simon, president of
MSU; John Haapaniemi (MSUCOM ’75), chief of staff at DMC;
and William D. Strampel, dean. The grand opening of MSUCOM’s
building at Macomb University Center will be held in early 2010,

More than 600 attend Silverfest events
With a backdrop of glorious fall weather, more than 600 alumni,
faculty, staff and friends of MSUCOM attended 2009
Silverfest events September 11-12, including the Osteopathic
Open golf tournament, a reception, a CME program, a huge tailgate,
and the MSU vs. Central Michigan football game. In 2010, Silverfest
is scheduled for September 24-25.
Students study in Mansoura, Egypt
Eleven MSUCOM students and two from the College of Human Medicine
traveled to Mansoura, Egypt, for clinical rotations and didactic
seminars at Mansoura
University Specialty Hospital. The program was organized
by the Institute of International Health and led by Reza Nassiri.

In the spotlight
Four MSUCOM faculty were noted for
their contributions to the college during the faculty fall assembly
September 24. The awards, given by the MSUCOM College Advisory
Council, highlight
faculty with a record of excellence and strong commitment
to mentoring students within the college. They included
Paul Quinlan, Clinical Faculty Excellence Award; Lawrence Prokop,
Clinical Faculty Excellence Award; Bhavini Bhavsar, Outstanding
Curriculum Contributions Award; and Laura McCabe, Research
Excellence Award.
Alumna Patricia
Novak received the College of American Pathologist’s
Pathologist Spotlight Service Award.
Eugene Oliveri, professor of internal
medicine, delivered the Andrew Taylor Still Memorial Lecture
at the most recent meeting of the American Osteopathic Association
House of Delegates. He spoke about the history of the National
Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

Alumnus Steven Pitt (’86), forensic psychiatrist,
was featured on ABC’s PrimeTime
Live for his work on the disappearance of 17-year-old Alyssa
Turney and his role in deterring a bomb attack on a union building
by her stepfather, Mike Tunney. Pitt was also interviewed
by the Insider about
Michael Jackson, was featured in Rotations,
and interviewed about David Carradine’s death in ETonline.
MSUCOM
at Macomb University Center was the subject of a substantive
feature in the Macomb Daily News.
Peter
Gulick, professor of internal medicine, has become the mid-Michigan
media’s
go-to-guy on issues of infectious diseases, most recently the
H1N1 virus.
