* Margaret Aguwa, DO, MPH, Associate
Dean of Community Outreach and Clinical Research, and Professor of Family
and Community Medicine, has been selected as the first recipient of the Sadia
Abbasi Award, by the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing. The award was created to honor
people who have made significant contributions to women’s health.
* Aubrey Hoye, MSUCOM Class of 2009,
was selected as the Medical Student Council’s Osteopathic Representative by the Emergency
Medicine Residents’ Association.
* Brian Smith, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of
Psychiatry, has been selected for the Lilly Scholars Program.
* Margaret Aguwa, DO, MPH, Associate
Dean of Community Outreach and Clinical Research, and Professor of Family
and Community Medicine, has been named a Detroit News Michiganian of the
Year. The honor recognizes
significant contributions to the community by individuals whose work have helped
make life better for others or have brought special recognition to our state.
* A total of 63 health care professionals attended three different CME manual medicine courses provided by MSUCOM during
April – “Craniosacral
Technique Level I” in Tucson, “Direct Action Thrust: Mobilization
with Impulse” in Fee Hall, and “Principles of Manual Medicine” in
East Lansing.
* The MSUCOM Office of Development held two dinners for
alumni and donors during April, one in conjunction with the Arizona Osteopathic
Association meeting in Scottsdale, and another in Las Vegas.
* Osteopathic medical students, under the leadership
of Frank Komara, DO, Professor of Family and Community Medicine, held a Senior
Falls Screen and Risk Assessment, open to the public, at the Ingham County
Medical Care Facility in Okemos on Saturday, April 12.
* The Learning and Assessment Center hosted the first regional Great Lakes SimExpo, targeted at medical educators
and learners, at the LaSalle Bank Club in Spartan Stadium. The program
included multiple vendors and speakers.
* Faculty and staff won two poster
awards at the recent American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine/American
Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators convention in St. Louis. Second
place (and first place viewers’ choice) went to Cheryl Doane, DO, Sherman Gorbis,
DO, Taylor Scott, DO, and Jonathan Rohrer, PhD, for “Implementation of
Hospital OPP/OMT Integration Workshop Modules.” Third place went
to Norma Baptista, PhD, Eric Zemper, PhD, and Jonathan Rohrer, PhD for “Implementation
of an Assessment Instrument for the AOA Core Competencies.”
