* MSUCOM extends congratulations to the following faculty who received a promotion in rank from Michigan State University. John Goudreau, DO, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurology and Ophthalmology; Catherine Kerschen, DO, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine; Min-Hao Kuo, PhD, Associate Professor with tenure, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Arshad Majid, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology and Ophthalmology; Jayne Martin, DO, Associate Professor of Neurology and Ophthalmology; and Robert Wiseman, PhD, Associate Professor with tenure, Departments of Physiology and Radiology.

* Andrea Amalfitano, DO, PhD, Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Endowed Chair, Professor, Departments of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and Pediatrics, and MSUCOM Class of 1990, has been appointed to the Michigan Newborn Screening Quality Assurance Advisory Committee by Governor Jennifer Granholm.

* Peter Ajluni, DO, AOA President-Elect and Clinical Professor of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties, was appointed to the Michigan Osteopathic Medicine Advisory Board (MOMAB) by Governor Granholm. Mel Larsen, who currently serves as the Chairperson of the MOMAB, was also reappointed for another term of service on the Board. The MOMAB was established by state legislation to provide oversight of MSUCOM and to also serve in an advisory capacity to the Dean.

* Dean Emeritus Myron Magen, DO and Ruth Magen, and MOMAB Chair Emeritus Thomas Angott and Nancy Angott have been named Honorary Co-Chairpersons of the 2007 MOCF Ball – “Puttin’ on the Glitz”, scheduled for Saturday, February 24, 2007, at the Ritz Carlton, Dearborn.

* Algirdas Juocys, DO, MSUCOM Class of 1977, received the Physician of the Year Award from the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

* The MSUCOM College Advisory Council presented the following awards during the Fall Semester Faculty Assembly. Terry A. Hagan, EdD, Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Pediatrics received the COM Award for Outstanding Curriculum Contributions; Jacob Rowan, DO, Assistant Professor of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, received the COM Teaching Excellence in Osteopathic Principles Award; and Gregory D. Fink, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, received the COM Research Excellence Award.

* The MSUCOM Class of 2010 has announced their class officers and committee representatives. * John Goudreau, DO, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Neurology & Ophthalmology, and Pharmacology & Toxicology, received a grant from the USAMRAA in the amount of $499,481, for his research project entitled “Environmental neurotoxin exposure-induced nuclear-mitrochondrial cascade mechanism of neurodegeneration”.

* The Osteopathic Open golf outing, hosted by MSUCOM and sponsored by Metro Health Hospital, was held on September 15. Thirty-six foursomes enjoyed the event, and helped raise funds for student scholarships.

* Silverfest alumni weekend was held on September 22-23, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Class of 1981, and included a Friday evening alumni reception, and on Saturday a CME course, pre-game tailgate, and the MSU vs. Notre Dame football game.
