- John K. Everett, D.O., MSUCOM Class of 1987 and Clinical Assistant Professor
of Family and Community Medicine, was honored by the National Rural Health
Association as the 2004 Rural Health Practitioner of the Year. Dr. Everett
received his award May 28 in San Diego and is the only physician in the nation
receiving this distinguished award this year.
- The 2004 Hooding and Commencement ceremony was held on May 6. RADM Joyce
Johnson, D.O., M.A., MSUCOM Class of 1980, delivered the keynote address
to the class. The faculty procession included over 100 representatives, with
members of the Michigan Osteopathic Medicine Advisory Board and senior administrators
from ten of the Statewide Campus System hospitals joining the procession
for this important event.
- Elections for the Statewide Campus System Governing Board were held at
the Membership meeting on May 26. Congratulations to the following board
members who were elected to the two open seats: CEO seat - William C. Cunningham,
D.O., M.H.A., Metropolitan Hospital (second term); and DME seat - Gary L.
Moorman, D.O., HFHS/HHS (Bi-County Community/HF Wyandotte).
- MSUCOM hosted its annual reception May 20 in conjunction with the MOA Convention
at the Dearborn Hyatt. More than 300 alumni and friends attended. In addition,
faculty and staff greeted alumni and friends at the college exhibit throughout
the week.
- David Dora, D.O., Director of Medical Education, Mercy General Health Partners,
received the Michael Opipari Distinguished Service Award. This award was
presented to Dr. Dora at the May 26 SCS Membership meeting.
- The MSUCOM Alumni Association Board of Directors met during the MOA Convention.
Under the leadership of new Association President, Myral Robbins, D.O., Class
of 1976, Board members listened to a college update from Dean Strampel and
began planning for upcoming events such as Silverfest and Seminar in the
Sun.
- The college hosted a strategic planning retreat on May 10 at the Henry
Center for Executive Development. Members of the Michigan Osteopathic Medicine
Advisory Board, Clinical Chairpersons, and the Dean's Executive Staff spent
the day discussing the vision for MSUCOM in the year 2020.
- Special thanks to our campus and community-based affiliates that have shown
support to the 2004 Silverfest weekend by placing an advertisement in the
Silverfest commemorative program.
