  • MSUCOM underwent review for AOA Accreditation the week of September 15. Seven AOA appointed site visitors inspected college programs, policies, and procedures, and will make a recommendation to the AOA regarding continuation of the college's accreditation.

  • The Fall Semester Faculty Assembly was held on September 10. Nearly 90 faculty members, including clinical faculty members from across the state, attended to hear Dean Strampel's college update and plan.

  • Administrators from MSUCOM represented the college at the Michigan Osteopathic Association Leadership Conference held September 19-21 at Crystal Mountain Resort to participate in the MOA's strategic planning process.

  • September 26-27 welcomed alumni and friends back to campus for Silverfest activities. The weekend began on Friday with the 5th Annual Osteopathic Open, a golf outing held at Hawk Hollow Golf Course, with a record 37 foursomes joining the event which raises money for emergency student loans and alumni activities. Friday evening alumni and friends enjoyed dinner and dancing at the University Club, where reunion classes shared memories and danced to the sounds of The KGB. A record crowd attended the Saturday morning CME program at the Kellogg Center, and over 300 guests joined the college for the pre-game tailgate party and then enjoyed a great Spartan victory over Iowa. The 25th anniversary Class of 1978 turned out in great numbers and raised money for the Pedro Rivera, D.O. Scholarship. In addition, the MSUCOM Alumni Board met Saturday morning and approved the MSUCOM Alumni Endowed Professorship, the first of its kind at MSU, which will be officially launched at the AOA Alumni Luncheon in New Orleans.

  • John Goudreau, D.O., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology and Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, was selected as Vice Coordinator for Level 1 of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. His term will run through September 2006.

  • The new MSUCOM Office of Multicultural Programs and Services is located in the Office of Student Services. Included in this office are the OsteoCHAMPS and Osteopathic Medical Scholars programs, as well as information on multicultural recruitment of students to the college.

  • John Tower, D.O., MSUCOM Class of 1985, recently completed a National Patient Safety Foundation and AHA Patient Safety Fellowship.

  • On September 22 the college hosted a luncheon for alumni, friends, and legislators from Kent County at Gibson's restaurant in Grand Rapids. Tammy Born, D.O., Class of 1986, assisted with coordination of the event. Seven legislators attended and provided their insight into the upcoming session, especially health policy issues.

  • Daniel Murman, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology, received Faculty Publication Recognition from MSU for the book he co-edited, "Handbook of Dementia. Psychological, Neurological, and Psychiatric Perspectives", John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2003.

  • The Department of Radiology hosted the second annual conference, "Celebrating the Synergy between Industry and Academia" on September 12. Dr. E. James Potchen, chairperson, and Interim President Lou Anna K. Simon, presented this year's synergy award to Walter L. Robb, Ph.D.. Under his management, GE introduced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) scanners that are now established as the standard in diagnostic imaging. In 1993, Dr. Robb was recognized by President Clinton with the National Medal of Technology.
