MSUCOM awarded the Walter F. Patenge Medal of Public Service to four individuals
on Friday, August 22: Lynn Brumm, D.O.; Edward N. Hodges, III, J.D.; Carol
Monson, D.O.; and W. Douglas Ward, Ph.D.. The ceremony included representation
from college and hospital administrators, past Patenge Medal recipients,
AOA President Darryl Beehler, D.O., AOA Executive Director John Crosby,
J.D., MOA President John Everett, D.O., and MOA Executive Director Dennis
Paradis.

Myron Magen, D.O., MSUCOM Dean Emeritus, will receive the Distinguished
Service Award from the American Osteopathic Association at the annual convention
in New Orleans.

Dean William Strampel, D.O., welcomed the Class of 2007 on August 18 during
the kick-off to Orientation Week, and introduced members of the Dean's
Executive Staff to the new incoming class.

The college celebrated the 2003 Convocation on Friday, August 22. Members
of the new Class of 2007 received their white coats from marshals representing
the faculty and Statewide Campus System. AOA President Darryl Beehler,
D.O., welcomed the incoming students, and Edward N. Hodges, III, J.D.,
provided the keynote address.

Thirty representatives formed an MSUCOM delegation that represented the
college and osteopathic profession in Michigan for the new Metropolitan
Hospital and Metro Health Village Groundbreaking Ceremony on August 22
in Grand Rapids.

Steven Karageanes, D.O., MSUCOM Class of 1995, has been appointed as the
team physician for Wayne State University athletics. In addition, Dr. Karageanes
continues to serve as a team physician for both the Detroit Lions and the
Detroit Tigers.

Margaret Aguwa, D.O., M.P.H., Chairperson and Professor, Department of
Family and Community Medicine, was appointed as Chairperson of the Minority
Health Initiative Committee of the American Osteopathic Association, and
to the Advisory Committee on Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry of the
Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services.

Tom Stevenson, D.O., MSUCOM Class of 1986, and Mark Notman, Ph.D., Executive
Director of Medical Informatics, are coordinating the establishment of
the American Osteopathic Academy of Medical Informatics. This new group
was endorsed by the AOA House of Delegates at their July meeting.

The Office of Medical Informatics and the Statewide Campus System hosted
a PDA Summit on August 14. Forty-eight medical educators and administrators
from 12 hospital training sites attended, helping identify current uses
of handheld computers in support of clinical education and practice as
well as program administration. Priorities and suggested next steps will
be outlined in a forthcoming report. An overview of participants' survey
