- Terrie Taylor, D.O., Professor of Internal Medicine, had the title of University
Distinguished Professor bestowed upon her on July 1. MSU will host a reception
in honor of Dr. Taylor's accomplishments in October.
- Carol Monson, D.O., MSUCOM Class of 1979, has been elected to a three-year
term on the Board of Trustees of the American Osteopathic Association.
- Greg Fink, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been awarded
a Program Project Grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
The project titled, "Neurohumoral control of veins in hypertension" received
an award of $8,695,857 over a five-year period. Dr. Fink's co-investigators
on this project include James Galligan, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology
and Toxicology; David Kreulen, Ph.D., Professor, Departments of Physiology,
and Neurology and Ophthalmology; and Stephanie Watts, Ph.D., Associate Professor
of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
- Thomas Hartkop, D.O., MSUCOM Class of 1980, announced Hartkop Productions'
latest film project, "Weightless", which was filmed at Johnson Space Center
in Houston, the University of Michigan, and Los Angeles. The film will be
aired on television in the near future.
- College personnel attended the MAOFP convention July 24-26 at the Kellogg
Center on the campus of MSU. Alumni and friends were greeted at the college
exhibit.
- Sigma Sigma Phi osteopathic honor society hosted their annual induction
ceremony on July 8, with Dean Strampel providing a welcome and college update.
- MSUCOM welcomed students from the Medical Trainer College, Toyko, Japan,
to the campus of MSU for a summer course in osteopathic manipulative medicine.
- Stephanie Watts, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology
and Toxicology, has been appointed to the AHA Greater Midwest Affiliate Research
Committee. This committee makes funding decisions on awards to investigators
in the Midwest. In addition, Dr. Watts has also been appointed to another
three-year term on the Council for High Blood Pressure Research Publications
Committee, and has been awarded an open-ended contract from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
to characterize 5HT receptor activity of some of this company's compounds.
- The MSUCOM OsteoCHAMPS Program completed its fourth summer Pre-College
Enrichment Program (PREP) for 27 high school students from Lansing, Detroit,
Mt. Clemens, and Muskegon. The intensive two-week program focused on instruction
in premedical and basic college education curriculum.
- The Department of Family and Community Medicine has been awarded a third
year of funding for its Division of Research by the US Department of Health
and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) project.
