- Peter E. Metropoulos, D.O., M.P.H., CMRO, FACOEM, MSUCOM Class of 1990,
has been appointed by NIOSH to the U.S. Department of Energy Physician Panel.
He is also the 2003 President of the Detroit Occupational Physician Association,
and is a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental
Medicine.
- The MSUCOM Student Chapter of the ACOFP was honored with two awards at
the annual convention March 19-22. The Communication Award which included
a $1,000 prize, and the Attendance Award.
- William Atchison, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has
been awarded a two-year grant of $156,000 from the Muscular Dystrophy Association
to support his research project entitled "Unmaking of L type Ca2+ channels
in Lambert Eaton Syndrome."
- Jed Magen, D.O., Acting Chairperson, Department of Psychiatry, has completed
his Master of Science in Medical Management from the School of Management,
University of Texas, Dallas.
- The MSUCOM Alumni Association held its annual Seminar in the Sun in Playa
Del Carmen, Mexico, March 1-8. Over 75 COM alumni and friends of the college
participated.
- Stephanie Watts, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology,
has been invited to join the Editorial Board of Hypertension and the International
Union of Pharmacology 5-HT Receptor Nomenclature Committee.
- The MSUCOM Diversity Education project hosted a lunchtime speaker on the
topic of Islam and Muslim patients. This session was attended by MSUCOM students,
faculty, and staff.
- Rebecca Watson, a graduate student working with Jay Goodman, Ph.D., Professor
of Pharmacology and Toxicology, received two awards at the recent SOT meeting
in Salt Lake City. She received a travel award from the Regulatory and Safety
Evaluation Specialty Section, and the second place award for the best student
presentation from the Carcinogenesis Specialty Section. These awards were
related to her presentation entitled, "Aberrant DNA methylation is a mechanism
in tumor promotion."
- MSUCOM participated as an exhibitor at the American College of Osteopathic
Family Physicians National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
- Eric Eggenberger, D.O., MSUCOM Class of 1987 and Associate Professor of
Neurology and Ophthalmology, served on an National Eye Institute Study Section
in Bethesda on March 18.
- Mark Notman, Ph.D., Executive Director of Medical Informatics, has been
named to the Board of Trustees of the American Osteopathic Academy of Medical
Informatics, as well as Chairperson of its Credentials Committee.
- Carrie Northcott has received a travel award from NHLBI to attend a meeting
of the InterAmerican Society of Hypertension in San Antonio and present the
results of her studies conducted with Stephanie Watts, Ph.D., Associate Professor,
Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
- The Spring Semester Faculty Assembly was held on March 27. Dean Strampel
presented his state of the college address and also discussed strategies
for the college's general fund budget reductions.
