Jed Magen, D.O., Department of Psychiatry, has been named Acting Chairperson
for the Department of Psychiatry.
-
David Neff, D.O., MSUCOM Class of 1980, and Merck Regional
Medical Director, received the "Move the Rock Award" at the Merck Medical
and Scientific Affairs Recognition Day. This is the highest honor given,
signifying recognition
as the most effective Regional Medical Director in the country.

Two faculty members of the Department of Pharmacology
and Toxicology were among the fall recipients of IRGP Grants for $50,000
from the Office of the
Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. Dr. Alex Chen's award
will support his studies on "Superoxide-induced cutaneous nitric oxide reduction
on would healing impairment in Type I diabetes", and John Goudreau, D.O.,
Ph.D. (jointly appointed in the Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology)
will use his award to support his studies on "The neuroprotective role of
alpha synuclein in Parkinson's disease".

Gary Moorman, D.O., Director of Medical Education, HFHS/HHS (Bi-County
Community/Henry Ford Wyandotte); Gail Riegle, Ph.D., Acting Senior Associate
Dean, and Associate Dean of Academic Programs; and Robert Sutton, Ph.D.,
Executive Director of Medical Education, Genesys Regional Medical Center,
have been appointed as Michigan representatives on the newly formed Advisory
Committee of the Section and Council of Medical Educators of the American
Osteopathic Association.

Sue Barman, Ph.D., Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, was elected
to a three year term as Chair of the Section Advisory Council of the American
Physiological Society (APS), and as a result, will also serve as an ex officio
member on the APS Council.

Karen Busch, Academic Specialist, received her Ph.D. degree in Higher Education
with an emphasis in Medical Education from Michigan State University.

The MSUCOM Alumni Association Board of Directors hosted a reception for
Ingham County alumni and friends of the college on December 11. Over 45 alumni
and friends participated in the event.

Jay Goodman, Ph.D., Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, received
a gift of $35,000 from the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company to support his research
on the role of altered DNA methylation in carcinogenesis.

Mark Cummings, Ph.D., Associate Dean, Statewide Campus System; Mark Notman,
Ph.D., Executive Director, Medical Informatics; and Gail Riegle, Ph.D., Acting
Senior Associate Dean and Associate Dean, Academic Programs, have become
Associate Members of the Michigan Osteopathic Association.

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology received a Summer Undergraduate
Research Fellowship (SURF) Award of $7,500 from the American Society for
Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. This is the tenth year that the
department has competed successfully for this annual award, which provides
partial stipends for five undergraduate students who spend ten weeks during
the summer term conducting research with faculty in the department. Peter
Cobbett, Ph.D., is Director of the SURF Program, and may be contacted directly
if you know of deserving third year undergraduate students who might be interested
in participating in this program.
