The MSUCOM Visiting Minority Faculty Program has been selected as an award
recipient for the MSU 2002 All-University Excellence in Diversity Recognition
and Awards Program, and will receive an individual award in the category
of Team Emerging Progress.

Jason Squires, MSUCOM Class of 2003, was awarded
Third Place in the 2002 Student Case Competition by the Board of Directors
of the American College
of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, for his paper, "Hemorrhagic Corpus
Luteum."

The MSUCOM Admissions Committee has offered admission to 98 applicants
for the incoming class for Fall Semester 2002.

The Spring Semester Faculty Assembly was held on March 25. Acting Dean
William Strampel, DO, delivered the state of the college address to nearly
70 faculty members.

The MSUCOM Office of Alumni Programs sponsored Seminar in the Sun in Punta
Cana, Dominican Republic. Almost 90 alumni, friends, and family members
enjoyed a week at the beautiful Paradisus resort. A 20-hour CME program,
co-chaired by David Neff, DO and John Tower, DO, was held in conjunction
with the trip, and included presentations by Peter Gulick, DO, Glen Hatcher,
DO, Oliver Hayes, DO, Laura Hershkowitz, DO, Michael James, DO, Tim Lambert,
DO, Eugene Oliveri, DO, William Strampel, DO, and Mary Jo Voelpel, DO.

Dr. Norbert Kaminski, Professor of Pharmacology and
Toxicology, has been notified that his NIH Grant from NIDA, "CB1/CB2-dependent and independent
T cell modulation", for $1.3 million will be funded for five more years
(years 11-15 of the project). This will allow Dr. Kaminski and his group
to continue to study the immunological actions of cannabinoids.

Cheryl Rockwell, a graduate student in Pharmacology
and Toxicology working in Dr. Kaminski's lab, has been awarded two
highly competitive predoctoral fellowships. She has had to decline
the two
year award from the Pharmaceutical
Research and Manufacturing Association Foundation in order to accept
a three year NIH Fellowship from NIDA.

The college sponsored a reception for alumni and friends during the ACOFP
Convention at Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Joanne Grzeszak, DO, Class of
1976 and president of MAOFP, hosted the event on behalf of the college.

The college hosted a Hospital Information Program on March 29. Students
had the opportunity to visit with representatives from various hospitals
regarding information on rotations, internships, and residencies.

Sandro Pinheiro, PhD, SCS Faculty Development Specialist, has accepted
an Assistant Professor position in the Department of Medicine at the University
of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and will be resigning from MSUCOM effective
May 31, 2002.

Sharon Reed, Curriculum Assistant in Academic Programs, retired March
1 after serving MSU for 17 years. Sherri Balmer, formerly in the Office
of Administrative Services, transferred to Academic Programs to fill the
position.

The Offices of Minority Students Services and Minority Recruitment are
relocating to A128 East Fee Hall.
