  • MSUCOM will host the Visiting Minority Faculty Lecture Series during February. We invite you to join us each Thursday of February at 4:00 pm at the Kellogg Center for presentations by notable scholars from across the country. For further information on specific presenters or lecture topics, or to register for these seminars, please contact 517-432-4979.

  • Jay Goodman, PhD, Acting Chairperson and Professor, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, received a $50,000 grant from the RJR Reynolds Tobacco Company to continue his research on the role of altered DNA methylation in carcinogenesis.

  • MSUCOM received 19 applications for the 2002 entering class in the Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program. Interviews and selection of 10 applicants for admission to the program will begin in February.

  • Stephanie Watts, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, received an Established Investigator Award from the national American Heart Association. The award, which began on January 1, 2002, pays $75,000 per year for four years to support her work on the role of phosphoinositide kinases on vascular function.

  • On January 22, the college celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a presentation by Robert Green, PhD, former president of the University of the District of Columbia, former dean of the MSU College of Urban Development, and former education director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dr. Green's talk, "What Would Dr. King Say Today: War, Racism, and Poverty," attracted nearly 200 people.

  • The Admissions Committee continues to meet on a weekly basis and has currently offered admission to 51 applicants for the Class of 2006.

  • The MSUCOM Scholarship Committee is currently reviewing applications of incoming, current, and graduating students for college scholarships/awards/loans. Last year the committee awarded over $100,000 to students.

  • Stephanie Watts, PhD, Associate Professor, and Alex Chen, PhD, Assistant Professor, both of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, have been appointed to serve for four years on AHA Peer Review Study Groups. Dr. Watts will be a member of the cardiovascular regulation group and Dr. Chen will be a member of the brain group. They will be responsible for evaluating affiliate and national AHA grants.

  • MSUCOM sponsored an alumni reception on January 11 during the MAOFP Convention at Shanty Creek. Approximately 125 alumni and friends attended.

  • The Office of Students Services is pleased to welcome Ms. Tamera Cox to the staff. Ms. Cox will serve as the Minority Recruiter for the college. She will be working very closely with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to gain ideas on how best to improve the recruitment of minority students to MSUCOM.

  • Adrienne M. Kania, DO, MSUCOM Class of 1987, and Katherine A. Worden, DO, MSUCOM Class of 1988, both earned certification in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, just two of 366 osteopathic physicians nationwide who currently hold this status.

  • Two second-year MSUCOM students have recently been selected to serve on AOA national committees. Sherry Cipriano will serve on the AOA Committee on Professional Publications, and Kerri Murphy will serve on the AOA Council on Research Grants.

  • The MSUCOM Diversity Committee will be sponsoring a display of African Art in the Kobiljak Center for the month of February in celebration of Black History Month.
