  • The MSUCOM Office of Research has awarded a $20,000 pilot grant to Sherman Gorbis, DO, Associate Professor of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, for his project "The Effects of a Wellness Program in Osteopathic Medical Students". In addition, a $5,000 grant has been awarded to Timothy Manahan, DO, Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine; David Grimshaw, DO, Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine; and Colleen Vallad-Hix, DO, Department of Pediatrics; for their collaborative project "Osteopathic Manipulation and Occipital Condylar Compression in Term Infants Experiencing Breast-feeding Difficulties: An Outcomes Study".

  • MSUCOM celebrated National Osteopathic Medicine Week from November 13 through 18 by hosting a series of seminars, research updates, health screens, SCS discussion panel, poster presentations, student luncheon, and concluded the week's festivities with the MSUCOM Open House. All activities during the week were made possible through generous sponsorship support by Caremark, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Physicians Health Plan of Mid-Michigan. The college sends our thanks and appreciation to each sponsor.

  • The MSUCOM Admissions Committee has offered admission to 42 applicants to date.

  • Ronald W. Wadle, DO, FACOS, Clinical Associate Professor of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties, was recognized with the 2000 Distinguished Osteopathic Surgeon Award by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.

  • Harris W. Mainster, DO, FACOS, was recognized with the Humanitarian Award by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons for the contributions that he and his wife have made by providing medical care to underserved populations around the world over the last 27 years.

  • Sixteen applications have been received from outstanding high school seniors interested in the Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program, with three of the applications being out of state students. Interviews will begin in February.

  • Barbara Ross-Lee, DO, MSU '73, has been named Dean of Allied Health and Life Sciences and Vice President for Health Sciences and Medical Affairs at the New York Institute of Technology.

  • Jayne Martin, DO, MSU '96 and Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology, was selected as the Stanley Kanev Award recipient for outstanding resident paper submission by the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists at the ACN/AOA meeting in Orlando.

  • Joseph Fortin, DO, MSU '84, presented the 2000 Rosenthal Lecture at the annual meeting of the Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

  • Three MSUCOM faculty were recognized with prestigious awards by the AOA Bureau of Research. Veronica Maher, PhD and J. Justin McCormick, PhD, were co-recipients of the Irwin Korr Award, and Terrie Taylor, DO, received the Gutensohn Denslow Award at the AOA Convention in Orlando.

  • Dennis Paradis, Executive Director of the Michigan Osteopathic Association, has been appointed chair of the Michigan Health Council Board of Directors.

  • The MSUCOM Scholarship Committee will be awarding three new scholarships during Spring Semester 2001. These are the Margaret Aguwa, DO, Endowed Scholarship; the Edward N. Hodges, III, JD, Endowed Scholarship; and the Blue Care Network of Michigan Endowed Scholarship in honor of Pedro Rivera, DO.

  • Congratulations to the winners of the MSUCOM prize drawings held in conjunction with the AOA Convention. Visitors to the college booth that updated their database information and completed a short questionnaire were eligible to win. The prize recipients were: Thomas Wills, DO, MSU '95, Silverfest Alumni Weekend Package; Diane Abby, DO, MSU '87, MSU Basketball Package; and Marguerite Elliott, DO, MSU '94, CME Package.

  • MSUCOM received the Gold Institutional Member award from the American Osteopathic Foundation during the AOA Convention in Orlando, and is the first institution to have this honor bestowed.

  • Myron Magen, DO, Dean Emeritus and Professor of Pediatrics was honored by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine with the Dale Dodson award.

  • The Emergency Medicine Residency was well represented at the AOA Convention, winning numerous research awards. Award recipients included: Vanessa Harkins, DO, MSU '97, 2nd place paper presentation; David Porter, DO, MSU '96, 2nd place poster presentation; Emergency Medicine residents Kurt Urban, DO, MSU '98, 1st place abstract; Phil Roberts, DO, 1st place poster; David Castle, DO, MSU '99, 3rd place abstract.

  • Mark Notman, PhD, Executive Director of Educational Technology, has been appointed to the Technical Advisory Committee of the American Osteopathic Information Association by AOA President Donald J. Krpan.
