  • Barbara Ross-Lee, DO, MSUCOM Class of 1973, was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award by the Michigan State University Alumni Association on October 12.

  • MSUCOM welcomed the following new MSU HealthTeam providers to the college: Francis Komara, DO (Family and Community Medicine), Gretchen Birbeck, MD and Jayne Martin, DO (Neurology and Ophthalmology), Cheryl Doane, DO (Family and Community Medicine), Robert Nied, MD, Robert Norris, MD, and Thomas Perkins, DO (Sports Medicine Fellows), Jennifer Gilmore, DO and Robert Woodbury, DO (Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine), Ryan O'Connor, DO (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation).

  • MSUCOM hosted a forum between candidates for the 70th District House of Representatives seat on October 25. Topics of discussion included health care, education, and university funding.

  • Edward Conley, DO, MSUCOM Class of 1982, hosted a reception in Flushing, Michigan, on October 18 for alumni, students, and friends of the college. MSU Trustee Robert Weiss provided guests with an update on the university.

  • Currently eighteen applicants have been offered admission to the MSUCOM Class of 2005.

  • MSUCOM hosted a reception in Traverse City on October 11 to honor local recipients of the 2000 Walter F. Patenge Meda of Public Service, Governor William Milliken and Kenneth Taylor, DO.

  • The Statewide Campus System is pleased to announce the appointment of two new educational specialists: Judith Kunkle, PhD and Dan Liechty, PhD. Dr. Kunkle will direct curriculum evaluation for SCS. She comes to MSUCOM with extensive experience in curriculum design and evaluation from the Medical College of Ohio. Dr. Liechty will work in evaluation design and the integration of Program Group II residency programs into SCS educational planning.

  • Margaret I. Aguwa, DO, MPH, Chairperson and Professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine, has been appointed to the Committee on Health Related Policies of the American Osteopathic Association.

  • Representatives from MSUCOM visited the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawas and Chippewas in Suttons Bay to discuss medical school, undergraduate student recruitment, and scholarship opportunities.

  • The following students have been elected as officers of the Class of 2004: Janelle Hendrian, President; Mohammed Khaleel, Vice President; Leslie Carpenter, Treasurer; Melissa Boehm, Secretary; Christine Park and Mia Taormina, Student Council Representatives.

  • New Student Council officers for the 2000-01 academic year are: Denise Klemczak, President; Kimberlynn Heller, Vice President; Sean McGavin, Treasurer; and Michelle Reicosky, Secretary.

  • A meeting was held in Traverse City with Mitzi Hewitt, DO to discuss the Migrant Health Clinic and how the college might interact with the clinic.

  • The SCS Strategic Planning Committee has begun meeting and will meet twice monthly until March 1 to develop a strategic plan to address critical planning issues for the SCS. The committee is following guidelines set by the SCS members at the SCS Strategic Planning Retreat. A summary of that retreat with committee guidelines is available through the office of the SCS.

  • The inaugural class of seven Michigan State University undergraduate students have started their studies in the Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program. Applications are now coming in for the second class to begin Fall Semester 2001. The application deadline is November 1, 2000.

  • Fundraising totals for MSUCOM for the 1999-2000 fiscal year totalled 643 donors and $972,195.

  • The MSUCOM Alumni Association visited with alumni and students in northern Michigan during early October, including representatives from the Cheboygan and Traverse City areas, as well as a visit to the CMU Health Center in Mt. Pleasant which is operated by MSUCOM alumni.

  • MSUCOM has twenty-four student organizations registered with the university. The college is very proud of each of these student organizations for being active in the community in order to promote the college and the profession.

  • MSUCOM students representing the Student Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine (SOASM) provided medical coverage and OMM treatment for participants in the MSU Dinosaur Dash 5K Run/Walk on October 1.
