  • Margaret Fankhauser, DO, has been named Chairperson of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Fankhauser has served as the acting chairperson of the department over the past 15 months.

  • Kenneth Moore, PhD, has been reappointed as Chairperson of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology for a one-year term beginning September 1, 2000.

  • MSUCOM awarded four Patenge Medals during the annual Convocation ceremony. Medal recipients for 2000 were: Floyd Meachum, DO; Governor William Milliken; Michael Opipari, DO; and Kenneth Taylor, DO.

  • Nearly 600 guests joined the college for the Class of 2004 Convocation and white coat ceremony. All MSUCOM departments and divisions had a representative participate in the presentation of white coats to our new students.

  • The MSUCOM Office of Research has created a new listserv, named com-research. Its purpose is to provide a forum where individuals interested in research may exchange ideas, information, announcements, and identify potential collaborative projects.

  • Dean Allen Jacobs, DO, PhD, Carol Monson, DO, Robert Stomel, DO, and Dennis Paradis have been appointed to the American Osteopathic Association Committee on Socioeconomic Affairs, with Max McKinney, DO serving as Board Liaison to the committee.

  • Larry Wickless, DO, has been elected to the American Osteopathic Association Board of Trustees. Dr. Wickless joins Peter Ajluni, DO and Max McKinney, DO as AOA Trustees from the State of Michigan.

  • On Friday August 25, 2000, the College welcomed seven MSU undergraduates as the inaugural students in the Osteopathic Medical Scholars program. These academically talented young men and women were formally recognized at the Convocation ceremony that afternoon.

  • Eighteen students from the Medical Trainer College in Tokyo, Japan, attended a course sponsored by MSUCOM on osteopathic manipulative medicine.

  • The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) hosted their annual research presentation day at the Kellogg Center. MSTP students are those pursuing a dual degree program, either DO/PhD or MD/PhD.

  • Dean Allen W. Jacobs and the MSUCOM Alumni Association hosted a reception at the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Practitioners conference in Mt. Pleasant.

  • MSUCOM hosted Orientation Week activities from August 17-25 for 125 incoming students of the Class of 2004.

  • The Department of Internal Medicine welcomed Christi Sovis as their new business manager. Christi was previously in the Division of Engineering Research at MSU, and fills the position previously held by Janet Young.

  • Representatives from MSUCOM won 1st place net score in the LPGA Oldsmobile Classic ProAm Golf Tournament. Team members that joined LPGA member Jill McGill included William Strampel, DO, Senior Associate Dean; Joel Greenberg, DO, Chairperson, Department of Pediatrics; Joseph Pirch, Executive Director, MSU HealthTeam; and Robert Lefler from Land Equities Corporation.

  • Several alumni, SCS partners, students, legislators, and friends of the college were invited to join Dean Allen W. Jacobs, members of his executive staff, and college advocacy staff at an appreciation luncheon held at Gibson's in Grand Rapids on August 30.
