· Terrie E. Taylor, DO, Professor of Internal Medicine, has been
chosen as the recipient of the 2000 Gutensohn-Denslow Award by the American
Osteopathic Association. The award is presented in honor of J. Stedman Denslow,
DO, a noted researcher in viscero-somatic reflexes, and in honor of Max T.
Gutensohn, DO, a noted educator and past chairman of the Bureau of Research.
This award represents the highest honor given by the AOA Bureau of Research.
It acknowledges noteworthy accomplishments in several areas of professional
life including research and education.

Veronica M. Maher, PhD, University Distinguished Professor, and
J. Justin McCormick, PhD, Associate Dean/Research and University
Distinguished Professor, have been jointly selected by the AOA
Bureau of Research to receive the 2000 Irvin M. Korr Award. The
Korr Award was created in 1999 and honors a PhD/Basic Scientist
who has in common with Dr. Irvin M. Korr, outstanding personal
and professional characteristics. Specifically, it reflects excellence
in research, and communication of scientific knowledge through
publication, teaching, and postdoctoral training.

The Faculty Development Program of the Statewide Campus System
received a Family Medicine Faculty Development Grant in the amount
of $776,442 from the Bureau of Health Professions, Department of
Health and Human Services. The "Train the Trainers" program will
ensure that future needs for well-trained community-based physician
leaders are met, will provide organizational leadership for medical
education in our community-based hospitals, and will provide the
SCS Family Medicine residency trainers opportunities to develop
new academic and clinical educational competencies.

The second lecture in the Patenge Distinguished Lecture Series
was presented on June 9 by Gunnar Anderrson, MD, PhD. Nearly 120
faculty, staff, students, and SCS members attended his discussion
of his osteopathic clinical trial project.

Jed Magen, DO, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, has been elected
as president of the American Osteopathic College of Neurology and
Psychiatry.
·
Michael Wieting, DO, Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation and Catherine Kerschen, DO, Assistant Professor
of Internal Medicine, have been appointed as student advisor liaisons
for MOA student committees.
·
The College has begun a pilot program with Crockett Technical High
School in Detroit. This program is designed to help recruit minority
students into the College.
·
The Fee Hall "Karen Post Student Activity Room" is being remodeled
during the summer with the help of our current students. It is
our hope to have it ready for orientation for the Class of 2004.
·
Orientation for the Class of 2004 is scheduled for August 17-25,
2000. Several events are planned where faculty/staff and current
students, as well as others, will be able to interact with the
new students. If you are interested in participating in orientation
events, please contact Katie Schafer in the Office of Student Services.

550 interns and residents have completed their programs and received
certificates prepared by the Statewide Campus System central staff.
·
Statewide Campus System Orthopedic Surgery division announces three
winners for the OS research day as follows:
1st place Ronald T. Rook, DO, Bi-County Community Hospital
2nd place Steven E. Weber, DO, Botsford General Hospital
3rd place Joseph Burkhardt DO, Garden City Osteopathic Hospital
