Graduation Awards

  • The Richard L. Alper Memorial Award
    awarded to Ali M. Saad
    Established in memory of Richard L. Alper, who died in a tragic plane crash in 1975 shortly before his graduation. Presented to a graduating MSUCOM student for distinguished service to the community. 

  • The Carnegie Medal for Academic Excellence
    awarded to Ruth M. Baer
    Presented by the Department of Internal Medicine to the graduating student with the best overall academic score from non-clinical courses.

  • Dean’s Recognition Award
    awarded to Jason J. Heisler
    Presented to the graduate who demonstrates leadership and advocacy for the college and the osteopathic profession, and exemplifies the best professional qualities of an osteopathic physician.

  • The Donna Jones-Moritsugu Award
    awarded to Mark A. Lanz, husband of Jennifer R. Ballew 
    Awarded to the spouse of a graduating student who best exemplifies the role of a professional’s partner.

  • The Annette Kabara Memorial Award
    awarded to Elina V. Pales
    Awarded to graduating students who are parents having faced special challenges.

  • Family and Community Medicine Achievement Award for Clinical Performance
    awarded to Jeremy J. Fischer
    Awarded to the graduating student who has most clearly exemplified an ongoing interest and proficiency in the field of family medicine.

  • Michigan Osteopathic Association Outstanding Senior Award
    awarded to Ruth M. Baer
    Given to a student in good academic standing who is actively involved in MOA, AOA, SOMA, or Student Council, and who has made significant extracurricular contributions to the college.

  • Distinguished Creative Presentation Award
    awarded to David J. Strobl, DO, Professor, Internal Medicine
    Awarded to a faculty member for most creative presentation "Who Wants to be a Cardiologist"

  • Distinguished Lecturer Award
    awarded to Shirley Siew, MD, Professor, Pathology
    Honors the faculty member whose lectures are most clear, coherent, instructive and well-presented.

  • The Walter C. Mill, DO, FAOCS, Award for Excellence in Surgery
    awarded to Michelle S. Bens and Sarah E. Strong
    Presented by the Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties to graduating students who best exemplify educational excellence in surgery, the surgical subspecialties and anesthesiology.

  • The Fred L. Mitchell Sr., DO, FAAO, Memorial Award
    awarded to Jason J. Heisler
    Awarded to graduating students for exceptional achievement in the field of osteopathic manipulative medicine.

  • Outstanding Basic Science Faculty Award
    awarded to Robert B. Stephenson, PhD, Associate Professor, Physiology
    Presented to a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching basic science and seeks to integrate basic science education with clinical medicine.

  • Outstanding Clinical Science Faculty Award
    awarded to Mary J. Hughes, DO, Professor, Internal Medicine
    Presented to the faculty member who is deemed the best role model and instructor of clinical medicine.

  • Outstanding Osteopathic Faculty Award
    awarded to Mark R. Gugel, DO, Associate Professor, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
    Presented to a faculty member for excellence in the teaching and practice of osteopathic principles.

  • Outstanding Student Support Award
