EAST LANSING -- It was an emotional afternoon
in Fee Hall, as Lynn Brumm, D.O. was honored at the dedication of the
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Laboratory on Friday, September 20.
The lab was funded by a $115,000 gift
from Jason and Danica Woolley in appreciation of the "compassion
and professional care" of Dr. Brumm, professor emeritus
of family and community medicine at MSUCOM. Mr. Woolley,
a former All-American hockey player for the Spartans,
is a member of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey
League. The gift was made to help ensure that more skilled
OMM professionals will be available to serve the public.
Among those in attendance were MSU Athletic
Director Ron Mason, who spoke about his former charge,
Mr. Woolley, and the relationship between sports and
medicine; Margaret Aguwa, D.O., who spoke about her many
years working along Dr. Brumm at MSUCOM; and James Rechtien,
D.O., Ph.D., who discussed the importance of the new
lab to the education of present and future OMM students.
All the speakers, including Dean William Strampel, D.O.,
had kind words for Dr. Brumm and his decades of service
to MSU and the D.O. profession.
Dr. Brumm then addressed the students, faculty
and friends who gathered in the new lab to pay tribute.
He
was visibly moved as he spoke of his appreciation of this
honor, and he implored the students in the room to continue
to strive toward the mastery of their science.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Dr. Brumm unveiled
a plaque that will permanently hang outside the OMM lab
. The plaque will forever honor the generous gift of Jason
and Danica Woolley, as well as the legacy of Dr. Brumm.
The new OMM facility includes a number
of improvements for the teaching of osteopathic manual
medicine, including excellent sight lines, underfloor
wiring, electronic treatment tables, Internet access,
and the ability to project digital slides, video and
audio. The laboratory can also be used as a videoconferencing
center for teaching manual medicine to students and physicians
in other locations.
