DR. MARGARET AGUWA RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS YWCA AWARD

EAST LANSING - The YWCA of Greater Lansing honored Margaret Aguwa, D.O., M.P.H., with the prestigious Diana Award on March 19, 2003. The Diana Award, given by the YWCA since 1975, celebrates the outstanding community service and professional achievements of women in the Lansing area. Dr. Aguwa is a professor and chair for the MSUCOM Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Dr. Aguwa was one of 10 finalists selected from among 30 nominated women in the Lansing area to receive this award. Dr. Aguwa was nominated by Lori A. Brochu, Quality of Life Director at the American Cancer Society in Lansing.

Brochu wrote, "Dr. Margaret Aguwa's infinite efforts in the face of diversity and health care disparities have been endless and she continues to spark change, hope and progress in these challenges in a positive, warm-hearted, honest and open way for better understanding and better education for better tomorrows for women and cancer patients everywhere."

The award will be presented to Dr. Aguwa and the other nine recipients at a formal sit-down dinner at the Lansing Center. Other Diana Award recipients from the Lansing area include:

  • Nancy Elwood, financial advisor at Merrill Lynch
  • Jean Golden, deputy city manager, City of East Lansing
  • Joan Jackson Johnson, Ph.D., East Lansing Center for the Family
  • Eldemira (Delma) Lopez, retired Lansing School District employee
  • Jan Williams Mayhew, registered financial planner, volunteer and coordinator of Operation Santa
  • Hon. Beverly Nettles-Nickerson, Ingham County Circuit Court Judge and adjunct professor at Cooley Law School
  • Judith L. Peakes, managing director, Boarshead Theatre
  • Maxine Thome, Ph.D., Michigan Public Health Institute
  • Karen Patricia Williams, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University
