The 2003 Visiting Minority Faculty Lecture Series
came to close on Thursday, with a visit by Mr. Tom Hayden, civil
rights activist and former California legislator. The event,
which is sponsored by the College of Osteopathic Medicine, has
brought many prominent figures to MSU's campus to teach to students
and speak on the important issues of diversity, civil rights
and education.
A Freedom Rider during the 1960's, Mr. Hayden has fought hard
for civil rights and equality, as both an activist and a state
legislator. He spoke at length about the struggles of the underprivileged
in this country. He also discussed his own Irish heritage and the
sometimes troubled connection between the black and Irish communities
throughout American history. The speech also mentioned Mr. Hayden's
efforts to help former gang members find jobs and the effort to
rebuild Los Angeles after the riots of the early 1990s.
|
This is third year of the Visiting Minority Faculty Lecture Series
and during his opening remarks, Dean William Strampel said he plans
to continue the series next year. The other speakers for the 2003
Series were Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, the Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn
Richardson, and MSUCOM professor, Dr. William Anderson. |

Rep. Mike Murphy presents a special citation in honor of Mr. Hayden's
visit to MSUCOM.
