Riverside Osteopathic Hospital to Close

October 31, 2002

Henry Ford Health System said last week it will close its Riverside Osteopathic Hospital, Trenton, Mich., by Dec. 31, citing the departure of its medical staff and a projected $21 million loss over the past four years.

In July the health system merged the hospital with 305-bed Henry Ford Wyandotte (Mich.) Hospital, intending to turn the osteopathic facility into an ambulatory and emergency-care center. The departure of 100 Riverside Osteopathic physicians to a competitor doomed the plan, Wyandotte Riverside President and CEO Jim Sexton said.

Earlier this year, a proposed merger between Riverside Osteopathic and 72-bed Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton also collapsed. The hospital has been operating only six acute-care beds since July. Officials hope to sell the facility once it's closed, Sexton said.
