Henry Ford Health System said last week it will close its Riverside Osteopathic
Hospital, Trenton, Mich., by Dec. 31, citing the departure of its medical staff
and a projected $21 million loss over the past four years.
In July the health system merged the hospital with 305-bed Henry Ford Wyandotte
(Mich.) Hospital, intending to turn the osteopathic facility into an ambulatory
and emergency-care center. The departure of 100 Riverside Osteopathic physicians
to a competitor doomed the plan, Wyandotte Riverside President and CEO Jim
Sexton said.
Earlier this year, a proposed merger between Riverside Osteopathic and 72-bed
Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton also collapsed. The hospital has
been operating only six acute-care beds since July. Officials hope to sell
the facility once it's closed, Sexton said.
