Malcolm Pope Named to Occupy Patenge Endowed Chair

Malcolm PopeEAST LANSING, Mich. -- Malcolm H. Pope of Aberdeen, Scotland, was named to occupy the Walter F. Patenge Endowed Chair in Osteopathic Medicine at the April 12 meeting of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.

He will lead a new neuromusculoskeletal research center at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

A bioengineer with expertise in ergonomics and spinal biomechanics, Pope was the director of the Liberty Worksafe Centre and a professor of health and safety at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Prior to that he served as endowed professor of biomedical engineering and orthopedic surgery, professor of mechanical engineering and of preventive medicine, director of the Iowa Spine Research Center and chairman of the biomedical engineering department at the University of Iowa.

He has written more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and more than 100 book chapters, and has multiple US patents. Pope has served as president of the International Society of Study of the Lumbar Spine and the American Society of Biomechanics.

Pope is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Donald Julius Groen Prize for Achievement in Biomedical Engineering, the Lissner Medal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the European Spine Society Award, the Sir Frederic Bartlett Medal from the Ergonomics Society, and is an honorary consultant to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

He holds three doctorates: the Ph.D. in biomechanics from the University of Vermont; the Dr. Med. Sc. From Gothenburg University, Goteborg, Sweden; and the D.Sc., from the University of Aberdeen.
