November 11, 2004
The
Diversity Education Series welcomed its first speaker of the fall semester
on Thursday, November 11. Father Jake Foglio delivered his presentation, "Spirituality,
Medicine and Patient Care” to students during the noon hour in E-105
Fee Hall. Father Foglio is a priest at St. John Student Parish in East Lansing
and is also a faculty member in the Department of Family Practice in the College
of Human Medicine. The discussion focused on what spirituality means, how it
affects well-being, and how doctors can discuss the subject with their patients.
This Diversity Education Lecture Series is part the Diversity Education Project
at MSUCOM, which brings noted speakers to the college to discuss race, gender,
religion and other cultural issues. The selection of speakers and topics is
based on surveys of MSUCOM students, that have determined the areas of greatest
interest to them as they prepare for careers in medicine.
Father Foglio was the first of two speakers to be featured this month. On
Thursday, November 18, Jerome H. Frankel, D.O., clinical assistant professor
in the Department Family and Community Medicine, will speak about “Osteopathic
Medicine
in the Inner City.” Dr. Frankel's presentation is co-sponsored by the
Michigan Osteopathic Student Society. The talk begins at noon in E-109 Fee
Hall and lunch will be provided for all attendees.
