Diversity Education Series Continues

Alice Dreger, Ph.D., visited the College of Osteopathic Medicine to deliver a presentation on "Intersex in Modern Medicine," on Thursday, June 12. Dr. Dreger is an associate professor of Science and Technology Studies at Lyman Briggs and associate faculty in the Center for Ethics and Humanities. Students, faculty and staff came out in force to hear Dr. Dreger speak.

Dr. Dreger is one of the leading experts on intersex issues. She explained concept of intersex individuals and how they are often misunderstood and mistreated. Children with an intersex conditions are often subjected to dangerous and unnecessary surgery. Dr. Dreger and others are working to educate parents and physicians about these relatively common conditions and other options for helping intersex children lead normal, healthy lives.

The presentation is part of the Diversity Education Series sponsored by MSUCOM. The next lecture in the series will be on June 26, 2003, at 12:00 p.m. in room E105 Fee Hall. Dr. Jayne Schuiteman, Women's Resource Center and Interim Director for Women's Studies Program, and Brent Bilodeau, Assistant for LBGT Concerns, Multicultural Development, Office of VP for Student Affairs and Services, will be speaking about gender issues.
