January 20, 2004
In
honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the College of Osteopathic Medicine sponsored
a presentation by Vence Bonham Jr., J.D., on Tuesday, January 20. Mr. Bonham
is senior advisor to the director on societal implications of genomics at the
National Human Genome Research Institute, which is part of the National Institutes
of Health. He is also an MSUCOM associate professor in the Department of Osteopathic
Surgical Specialties and the Department of Medicine.
Mr. Bonham spoke to several dozen students, faculty and staff members in E105
Fee Hall. The topic was “Race, Genetics and Health Disparities: Why We
Must All Be Engaged,” and the discussion focused on the current debates
in the scientific community over genomics and how recent discoveries in genetics
relate to race, biology and medicine.
The talk was a continuation of the Diversity Education Series, which began
at MSUCOM last year and brought noted speakers to the college to discuss race,
gender, religion and other culture issues. More lectures will follow throughout
2004.
