Margaret I. Aguwa,
DO, MPH, has been named chairperson of the Department of Family and Community
Medicine. Dr. Aguwa joined the MSUCOM faculty in 1976, after completing
her degree at the University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic
Medicine. She received an MPH with an emphasis in maternal and child health
from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health in 1979.During
her tenure at MSUCOM, Dr. Aguwa has distinguished herself as a teacher,
researcher, and administrator. She has served as director of the MSUCOM/St.
Lawrence Hospital Osteopathic Internship Program, director of the Medical
Access and Support Program for disadvantaged students, and director
of the Junior-Senior Partnership Program in Family Medicine. Her research
has focused primarily on women’s
health, African health, breast health care, and osteopathic medical education.
Her recent research into the professional identification and affiliation
of osteopathic medical college graduates was chosen as lead article for
the Journal
of the American Osteopathic Association’s August issue (vol. 99,
8).Her outreach activities have included consulting for the Ingham County
Health Department, the Imo State Nigeria Ministry of Health, and the Michigan
Department of Social Services. She has also served as a grant reviewer for
the Carnegie Corporation.Dr. Aguwa looks forward to her new administrative
challenges.
