HASLETT, MI – Community members gathered at Haslett High School
to mark the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington
and Pennsylvania.
The memorial event was sponsored by the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine
Student Council.
The theme of the memorial was "Remembrance and Recovery." Speakers
shared their thoughts and experiences in the aftermath of September 11. Steve
Karageanes, D.O., a 1995 graduate of the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine,
displayed photographs from his journey to New York where he cared for rescue
workers immediately following the attack. Chaplain Roger S. Winburg, Lt. Col.,
U.S. Air Force, spoke about troops and their living conditions in Afghanistan,
where he was deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Jack Wilson, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, discussed the different stages
of grief and how people can recover from such emotional tragedies. The evening
included spiritual reflections from speakers representing Islamic, Jewish,
and Christian faiths.
The event also featured a video with images from September 11, which ended
with members of the MSU Marching Band performing "Taps."
