Goals of Treatment

Increase the quality of life for individuals experiencing debilitating or life threatening conditions by helping them to:

Ø      Understand emotional reactions to illness and medical procedures.

Ø      Become aware of the behavioral effects of these emotional reactions.

Ø      Learn effective methods for coping with the emotional reactions and behavioral effects of illness.

Ø      Learn effective techniques for managing symptoms.

Ø      Develop an awareness of individual strengths and acceptance of physical limitations.

Ø      Develop health-promoting behaviors.

Ø      Understand the relationship between stress and symptomatic flare-ups.

Ø      Learn more effective stress management and coping skills.

Ø      Learn ways to decrease over dependence on health care providers.

 

Methods of Treatment

Ø      Brief psychological assessment to develop treatment goals and plan.

Ø      Comprehensive psychological and/or neuropsychological assessment when indicated or requested by referral source.

Ø      Long-term or time-limited individual/family treatment that may include:

v     Individual/Family counseling

v     Holistic cognitive therapy group treatment

v     Grief and loss counseling

v     Brain injury education

v     Family education

v     Adjustment counseling

v      Crisis intervention counseling

Our Team

MSU Rehabilitation Medicine Clinic has a dynamic and well-trained staff to meet patient’s needs. The psychology staff is part of an interdisciplinary team of specialists at the clinic, including Physiatrists (physician’s board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech/Language Pathologists. Our staff is also a part of the MSU Health Team, enabling communication and referral options with a large variety of health care specialists.
