OsteoCHAMP students studying in a laboratory
OsteoCHAMPS students had opportunities to work in laboratory settings.

The ninth on-campus summer experience of OsteoCHAMPS students was held July 14-25, 2008 on the MSU campus. MSUCOM’s “OsteoCHAMPS” program (Osteopathic Careers in Health and Medical Program Services) forges partnerships with Michigan high schools and community foundations to encourage capable young multicultural students who might not initially know about osteopathic medicine to consider it as a career. In addition, these students are taught ways to enhance their study skills, motivation, leadership and basic science knowledge. Twenty-six students participated: from southeastern Michigan, the Muskegon area, the Lansing area, the Kalamazoo area, and from Saginaw. At present 17 college-level OsteoCHAMPS are enrolled in universities, eight of these at MSU.

History

The OsteoCHAMPS program was established in 2000 initially with the Ethylene Crockett Vocational/Technical High School in Detroit, to encourage, prepare and foster the healthy career interests of disadvantaged high school students. The program now partners with several schools and Foundations in various communities across the state of Michigan towards fulfilling its objectives. Program activities and services continue to expand annually.
