September 2008
Southeast
Michigan Expansion is accredited
The expansion of MSUCOM to two sites in southeast Michigan has been approved
by its accrediting body, the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.
The action, taken by COCA after its September meeting, followed a thorough examination
of the curriculum, faculty and staff, student support services, learning resources,
and finances of the expansion. It also included a visit to each site.
What
a weekend!
Despite the weather, more than 500 persons participated in MSUCOM’s
activities September 12-13. A record 149 golfers participated in the Osteopathic
Open, sponsored by the MSU Federal Credit Union. Forty D.O.s attended
CME’s “Fall Kaleidoscope” program. An evening reception,
sponsored by Ingham Regional Medical Center, and a pre-MSU/Florida Atlantic
game tailgate, sponsored by Capitol National Bank, Kheder Davis & Associates,
and the Michigan Osteopathic Association, drew more than 300.

Flee,
Fly, Flu!
MSUCOM students with their faculty mentors prepared 370 state elected officials
and their staff for the upcoming flu season with Legislative Flu Shots. The
annual event is an opportunity to strengthen the awareness of osteopathic
medicine among the legislature, to hone students’ clinical skills and
to give the legislature a dose of osteopathic preventive care before the harsh
winter weather arrives.
Mini
Medical School
More than 40 community members are participating in MSUCOM’s eighth
annual Mini Medical School, learning about how their bodies work and measures
to keep themselves healthy. Faculty this year include Dr. David Strobl
(cardiology), Dr. Peter Gulick (cancer), Dr. Edward Rosick (integrated medicine
for inflammation), Dr. Lisa DeStefano (osteopathic manipulative medicine),
Dr. David Wartinger (prostate and urology), and Dr. John Goudreau (Parkinson’s
disease).

The alumni cookie caravan was on the road again this month as MSUCOM’s
alumni office paid surprise visits to 13 alumni in Macomb County to deliver
