MSUCOM looks for students who are academically accomplished, committed to service and well versed in the philosophy of osteopathic medicine.   In each area of evaluation, we examine applicants’ accomplishments within the context of their life experience.  Much like the way DOs approach their patients, we invite applicants to tell us their stories by completing a comprehensive supplemental application.

Academic minimum standards for receiving a supplemental application are 2.70 science and overall grade-point average, and total Medical College Admission Test score of 18, with subject-area minimums of 4 in verbal reasoning, 5 in physical sciences, and 6 in biological sciences.

The Admissions Committee meets weekly, beginning in late August.  Our weighted ranking, used to determine the order in which applications are reviewed, is 60 percent academic and 40 percent nonacademic.   All screening is blind to race/ethnicity, age and gender.

Review criteria may include:  grade-point average;  level and types of coursework; academic honors;  MCAT scores; commitment to service; demonstrated skills in communication, leadership, collaboration, problem solving, and critical thinking; fluency in multiple languages; military service; participation in varsity sports; research experience; and appreciation for diversity and cultural competence in healthcare.

Many applications are sufficiently thorough to allow the committee to make an immediate decision to offer admission, a position on the waiting list or to deny the application.    Some applicants are invited to have a single, one-hour interview.    All committee decisions may be subject to review by the dean of the college.

Applicants offered admission or waiting list positions are invited to visit the college.  Those applicants who are invited for an interview are included.  Visits take place on Friday afternoons, generally scheduled twice each month.  The day includes presentations by and Q & A sessions with the Associate Dean for Student Services and the Director of Admissions, followed by a panel presentation and tours conducted by MSUCOM students.
