Month in Review

June 2008

* On June 23, the first MRI unit in the country of Malawi was dedicated by the minister of health.  The MRI, which is housed at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, was made possible by a donation from General Electric as well as support from MSUCOM for the new building.  Terrie Taylor, DO, University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, who spends six months a year in Malawi, will use the MRI to assist in treating patients with malaria, as well as to further her research on malaria.  The MRI also will serve the neighboring countries of Mozambique and Zambia, neither of which has an MRI.

* On Tuesday, June 10, MSUCOM recognized more than 100 students who had received scholarships and their donors at the annual Honors and Scholarship Dinner held at the Kellogg Center.  Two of the student recipients – Reddog Sina, Class of 2009, and Nicole Szell, Class of 2011, spoke about what their scholarships had meant to their lives.

* Reddog Sina, Class of 2009, was recognized as the Student D.O. of the Year during the Honors and Scholarship Dinner.  Adam Hunt, Student Council President and Class of 2011, presented the award.

* Kimberley A. Rockwell, Administrative Assistant I, Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology, was presented with the 2008 COM Staff Excellence Award.

* MSUCOM welcomed the Class of 2012 on June 23, the start of Orientation week.

* The 2008 Convocation was held on June 27 at the Wharton Center.  Students in the incoming class received their white coat as a symbol of the onset of their osteopathic medical education.

* MSUCOM was represented by a Dean’s representative at all Statewide Campus System hospital partner intern and resident graduation ceremonies.

* MSUCOM and the Michigan Osteopathic College Foundation (MOCF) applaud and recognize the following individuals that have made a commitment (as of 6/30/08) to serve as a 2009 Diplomat of the MOCF Ball.  Bronze Diplomats:  Brenda Fortunate, DO and Edward White; Patron Diplomats:  Sander J.
