Osteopathic Medicine

A Message from the Dean

Dean William D. Strampel, D.O.Welcome to the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine! We are pleased that you have dropped by our web site to learn more about our nationally ranked college and the osteopathic profession.

Osteopathic medicine, founded more than 100 years ago by Andrew Taylor Still, offers all a whole-person approach, an emphasis on wellness and prevention, and osteopathic manipulative medicine.  Osteopathic physicians serve in hospitals and clinics across the nation, and have achieved the highest medical positions in organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. military, professional sports teams, NASA, and in forensic medicine and research.

For more than a quarter of a century, MSUCOM has been a leader in the osteopathic profession. We were founded in 1969 by act of the Michigan legislature to meet the need for physicians for our state.  Since then, we have grown and developed such that today we are ranked seventh in the nation among all medical schools – M.D. and D.O. – for our primary care education.  In addition, we have more funding than any other osteopathic college for research from the National Institutes of Health, a key index of research success.

We are now on the brink of an historic expansion, as we prepare to open two additional sites for our college.  In 2009, pending accreditation, 100 members of our entering class will take their first- and second-year studies at two sites in southeast Michigan: 50 at the Macomb University Center in Clinton Township, and 50 at the Detroit Medical Center downtown. This expansion will serve many objectives, chief of which is to meet the anticipated shortage of physicians both in Michigan and nationally.

In health care, we continue to offer patients the tools and support to preserve and restore health. We listen to their concerns, we work as partners with them, and we offer them the unique benefits of osteopathic medicine. Osteopathic medicine is the medicine of the future that is available today.

Thank you for visiting the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, and we hope you’ll enjoy your stay!

Best Regards,

William D. Strampel, D.O.
