OUR PHILOSOPHY
Osteopathic
Medical Scholars Program (OMSP) seeks to enrich the scope of undergraduate
scholars through a variety of program expectations, responsibilities,
and a strong sense of commitment to the community.
In an effort to humanize the process of becoming a doctor, the program
integrates an early exposure to physician and clinical skills, community
involvement, and leadership roles. These experiences develop
a strong support network of peers that share similar goals, explore
personal strengths and weaknesses, and develop a deeper understanding
of the osteopathic profession.
"This philosophy emphasizes the
treatment of the person, not the disease. I identify with this way of
thinking, and I thought I could attend an allopathic school and still
put my philosophy into practice, but the synergy with similar attitudes
that I anticipate at an osteopathic medical school is exciting." - Kirk
Down, MSUCOM Class of 2006 and former Medical Scholar
OUR HISTORY
Dr. Norma Baptista and the late Dean, Dr.
Allen Jacobs founded OMSP in the year 2000. Their goal was
to create a program that would emphasize academic excellence and
a strong sense of community for a select group of students interested
in osteopathic medicine. In the Fall of 2000, the first group of
eight MSU undergraduates was accepted into the program. Since then
10-15 new scholars have entered the program at the start of each
academic year. The current director of OMSP is Rosemarie Handley.
"The Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program will teach me ideas,
concerns, and problems that physicians will undoubtedly face, and mechanisms to resolve them." - Subir Shah, Osteopathic Medical Scholar
