FALL2014COMMUNIQU1STUDENTSSaturdaymorningsandalternatedbetweenMSUandSparrow.Aboutvestudentsfromeachofthethreehighschoolswereselected.TheseparticipantswerementoredbyMSUCOMstudentstheymetandworkedwithfacultymembersanddoctorsintheSparrowsystem.Thestudentsalsotookpartinclassroomactivitiesandlearnedtobuildstudyskillsandexamstrategies.TheytookpartinanosteopathicmanipulativemedicinedemonstrationandlearnedbasicCPRskills.IknowMSUcancovertest-takinganddidacticexperiences.IwanttodeliveranintegratedexperienceintheemergencydepartmentbutIdontwanttogivethemjustemergencymedicinewewanttogivethemanexperiencewheretheycaninteractwithpathologists.IftheycouldwatchanautopsyorseeoneonvideoIthinkitwouldbeexcitingsaysTimothyHodgeSparrowexecutivemedicaldirectorofemergencyservicesandamemberoftheSparrowHealthSystemBoardofDirectors.Ialsoaskedmyradiologyandcardiologycolleaguestospendtimewiththestudentssotheycouldlearnthingslikewhatastresstestisandwhathappensduringacardiaccatheterization.AfterthissummersexperiencetheLansingFutureDOcsprogramwillbebyLauraProbynEveryonehastostartsomewhere.TheresnoprofessionwherethatstatementisnottrueandforosteopathicphysiciansonepossiblestartingpointistheMSUCollegeofOsteopathicMedicinesFutureDOcsprogram.ThisprogramhasbeeninplaceforthreeyearsinsoutheastMichiganwhereadministratorsathighschoolsinMacombandWaynecountieshaveworkedwithMSUCOMfacultystaffandstudentsattheMacombUniversityCenterandDetroitMedicalCentersitestointroduceparticipantstopeopleandcareersinmedicine.FutureDOcshasnowexpandedtomid-Michiganinasummerpilotprogramforninththrough11thgradersatSextonEasternandEveretthighschools.ThoughtheLansingprogramtakesasimilarformatastheMacombandDetroitprogramsitistailoredtomakeuseoflocalresourcespeopleandfacilities.EachoftheFutureDOcsprogramsisuniquetomeetparticipantsindividualneedsjustliketheosteopathicphilosophysaysKatherineRugeradmissionsdirectorforMSUCOM.TheLansingFutureDOcsinitiativeisbeingofferedinpartnershipwithSparrowHealthSystem.Highschoolstudentswhoareinterestedinhealth-relatedcareerscanlearnaboutwhatittakestogettomedicalschoolwhatthelifeofamedicalschoolstudentislikeandwhatkindsofcareersareopentodoctorsofosteopathicmedicine.Theseven-weekprogramwasheldonAnMSUCOMstudentworkswithoneofthepotentialFutureDOcsparticipantsduringanintroductorysessioninFeeHall.expandedtoinclude15studentsfromeachofthethreehighschools.RugerandherteamareincorporatingFutureDOcsintoabroaderplantodevelopagraduatedsetofactivitiestointroducehighschoolerstotheosteopathicprofession.WereexcitedaboutthesupportandgrowthweareseeingsaidFloydHardinIIIMSUCOMmanagerofoutreachandinclusion.Werebeingveryintentionalaboutourobjectivesandourworktobuildandestablishanoutcome-basedprogram.FutureDOcsisthestartingpoint.StudentswhobegintherecanmoveintotheOsteoCHAMPSprogramatwo-weekpre-collegeexperiencethatgivesparticipantsthechancetoeatsleepandstudyindormitoriesattendclassesontheMSUcampusandcompleteprojectsrelatedtotheirstudiesinanatomyphysiologychemistryandmedicalresearch.LaterasMSUundergraduatestheycanapplytotheOsteopathicMedicalScholarsProgramthatprovidesfurtherinsightsintotheprofessionandmoreexposuretostudentsthecurriculumandmedicalcareers.TheideaistopullfromourthreecommunitieswherethecollegeisrepresentedandcreatepipelineprogramstomakestudentsfeelasenseofbelongingtoexperiencetherealitiesofpursuingmedicalschoolandtobementoredbysomeonewhocanhelpthemalongthewayRugersaid.FutureDOcsistheinitialstageofthatbecausewegenerallystartthemasfreshmeninhighschool.Fromtherewerejusthelpingtoprovideadditionalresources.HodgeseestheimportanceofFutureDOcsbeyondtheclassroomandevenbeyondthemedicalprofession.Wehad16greatstudentsandIlookforwardtothembeingattheMSUCollegeofOsteopathicMedicinesomedaybutthisprogramisntjustabouthelpingkidslearnaboutwhatittakestobeaphysicianHodgeanMSUCOMalumnusnotes.Itsaboutgrowingleaders.Ourschoolsneedhelpgrowingleaders.Iexpecttoseeleadersfortherespectivehighschoolsandleadersforthiscommunity.FUTUREDOcsexplorefuturePOSSIBILITIESJoycedeJongMSUCOMClassof1988helpstheLansingFutureDOcslearnabouttheanatomyofthehumanbodyduringthesummerprogram.
